New Writing Exercise #36
devised by Margaret Wilkinson

Autobiographical poems
Linda Anderson Browse workshops

Try these ideas for unusual autobiographical poems:

#1 List your faults (e.g. vanity, greed, impatience) and imagine one of them is illegal. What crime have you committed? How should you be punished?

#2 Think of an important decision you have taken (leaving a partner, turning down a job offer) and speedwrite for two minutes about life as it might have been. Choose your favourite five sentences and form them into a poem of celebration or regret.

#3 A private detective is searching your house. What incriminating evidence will s/he discover?
