#1 Starting with ‘It’s five a.m,’ relate a day in the life of one zoo animal without naming the species or saying that your poem or story is set in a zoo.
#2 Choose an animal to use as a metaphor for someone’s appearance and personality (e.g. a giraffe might suggest someone tall and ungainly, slow and nervous; a warthog, someone brisk, brusque and hairy). Now put your character in a situation where s/he feels trapped (a violent marriage, a dull job, a kitchen full of under-fives).
#3 Write a list of what a zoo is not. Turn it into a poem about freedom.
