New Writing Exercise #32
devised by Margaret Wilkinson

POETRY COMP

#1 To freshen your poems, try applying some of the principles of expository writing (i.e. writing that makes an argument): Choose an expository form (a recipe, an advert, a set of instructions) and apply it to a subject it wouldn’t normally be used for (remembering the past, mourning a death, bringing up a child, coping with the menopause)

#2 To lighten any heavy dominance of rhyme in your poems, experiment with more distant rhyme patterns. Stanzas that rhyme ABCD, ABCD are formal, yet give the impression of free verse at the same time.
