New Writing Exercise #29
devised by Margaret Wilkinson

#1 Choose a place you have visited and list the following: things that fall from the sky in that place; things that lie on the ground; things that are broken. Turn your list into a narrative.

#2 Write three postcards from a place you have been – with fewer than 100 words on each – describing the following: something wonderful you’ve seen; something terrible; something surprising. Write in second person as though addressing someone specific. Now develop one into a narrative.

#3 To inject originality into your description, record the sights, smells, sounds of a place – then swap the adjectives to create a synaesthetic effect.
