EROTIC WRITING

Guest Editor MICHELE ROBERTS introduces her pick of erotic poetry and prose

MY idea of a turn-on in words might not be yours. My erotic might be your pornographic. Or vice versa. Pornography has been disapproved of by one group of women, rescued and re-valued by another. There are no definitions of sexiness upon which we can all agree, and perhaps there shouldn't be. Perhaps we should just applaud the range and variety of our imaginations.

When it came to selecting the poetry and prose for this issue of the magazine, I tried to be objective in choosing pieces which I thought worked well. But to some extent, inevitably, my own taste has entered in. If I tell you what kinds of writing I liked, and why, and what I didn't like, and why, then at least you'll be able to see the criteria I was using in making my final selection - and agree or disagree with my decisions.

I like reading poems and stories about sex which celebrate pleasure and make me want to dash off and have sexual pleasure myself. Writing itself can be a highly stimulating and pleasurable act, and make you come. Reading can be likewise.
