Introductory essay

Your dead mother

Lynne Shapiro

Dangles from the sky
Like a slim moon
Strung on a string
Silvery blue dress
Pleated like a curtain
Shimmers in your
Room at night
As cocktail gloves
And long fingers
Reach down to caress
Your sleepy head

LYNNE SHAPIRO, 53, has had work previously published in Hiss Quarterly, Tiny Lights and Mourning Sickness: Stories and Poems About Miscarriage, Stillbirth and Infant Loss. A teacher, she manages anywhere from five to 14 hours of writing a week (her weekly writing group provides nurturing as well as the ‘gun to the head’ that she needs).
