What is a PDF?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format (created by a company called Adobe). It is a type of file which can contain text and graphics and can be shared across different kinds of computers without loss of fonts or formatting.

Why have you used PDFs?

Unlike other formats which require a user to own a particular program or piece of software, PDFs can be viewed on a large number of different computer types with a free piece of software available on the internet. This includes:

Windows 3.1 / 95 / 98 / 2000 / ME / NT / XP
Mac OS 7.5 to 9.2 and OS X
Linux and Unix (various distributions)

How do I access the subscription form or the back issue form as a PDF?

Almost all recent computers come with Acrobat Reader pre-installed.

If your computer does not have Acrobat Reader installed you will need to download a free copy from the Adobe website:

Download Acrobat Reader from Adobe

What do I do when I have downloaded and installed Acrobat Reader?

Depending upon which types of computer you use, there are several different ways to view the PDF files:

Some types of computers have a special software plugin for your web browser which loads the PDF in a web browser window (this plugin comes with Acrobat Reader). Others will automatically launch the Acrobat Reader program when you click on a link to a PDF file.

If you have installed Acrobat Reader, you may need to quit and relaunch your web browser to activate the PDF viewing ability.

I have Acrobat Reader, but the PDF files do not automatically open when I click to download full details as PDF.

If when you click to download full details as a PDF you see a download file dialog, try downloading the file to your computer, launching Acrobat Reader yourself and then selecting open from the file menu.

On some computer systems the download dialog also has a button labelled "open with application" – you can also use this option to select Acrobat Reader, after which your web browser should remember this setting and automatically launch Acrobat Reader whenever you click on a PDF link.
